About our Handwriting & Tracing worksheets

Tracing teaches two specific things: the shape of a letter, and the order and direction of the strokes that make it. What it does not do is build the hand strength a child needs to write comfortably — and a child who lacks that strength will grip harder to compensate, which is how an awkward pencil hold gets locked in. So these worksheets work best as the middle step of three. Before them come strength and control activities: play dough, tongs, pegs, threading beads, drawing on a vertical surface. After them comes unsupported writing. Each sheet gives a large, faint outline to trace and blank space alongside to write the letter unaided, so a child moves from copying to producing within the same line. Keep sessions short. Five well-formed letters beat a full page of deteriorating ones, and a letter practised badly is harder to fix than one not yet practised. Our guide on how to teach a child to hold a pencil covers the grip stages and the small number of signs actually worth acting on.
