Mazes, matching, odd-one-out, dot-to-dots, word searches and sudoku for beginners. These look like the fun page at the back of a magazine, and they are — but they are also the closest thing on this site to what competitive exams call logical reasoning, which is a genuine gap in most school curricula. A child who has done a lot of pattern and sequence puzzles walks into that section of an olympiad paper recognising the question types. A child who has not meets them for the first time in the exam hall and loses marks they were perfectly capable of earning. Print these for car journeys, waiting rooms and the half hour before dinner. They need no supervision, they are self-marking in the sense that a maze either works or it does not, and children will do them voluntarily — which is most of the battle.
