What this worksheet covers
This is an eighteen-question practice worksheet on plants — structure and function for Class 6, written to the pattern of the SOF National Science Olympiad (NSO). It carries 24 marks and is designed to be attempted in 45 minutes, split across three sections — Scientific Reasoning, Applying What You Know and Achievers Section. Every question is multiple choice with exactly one correct option, and every one comes with a fully worked solution rather than just an answer key — so a child who gets one wrong can see where the reasoning went astray instead of only learning that it did.
Skills your child practises
- Applied problem-solving on plants — structure and function at Class 6 level
- Working accurately against a time limit, as the real paper demands
- Scientific Reasoning questions in the olympiad format
- Applying What You Know questions in the olympiad format
- Achievers Section questions in the olympiad format
- Reading worked solutions to find the step that went wrong
How to use it
- 1There are 18 questions in this worksheet. All questions are compulsory.
- 2Each question has four options (A), (B), (C) and (D). Exactly one option is correct.
- 3Questions 1–15 carry 1 mark each. Questions 16–18 (Achievers Section) carry 3 marks each.
- 4There is no negative marking. Study every diagram and table carefully.

1. The arrangement of veins in a leaf blade is called _______.
- AVenationcorrect
- BTranspiration
- CGermination
- DPollination
Solution: Venation is the pattern of veins in a leaf. It is reticulate (net-like) in most broad-leaved plants and parallel in grasses and maize.2. A potted plant is watered with red-coloured water. After a few hours the stem is cut across. Which part will appear red?
- AThe whole cut surface
- BOnly the xylem tubescorrect
- COnly the phloem tubes
- DNothing will appear red
Solution: Water and anything dissolved in it travel upward through the xylem, so only the xylem tubes take up the dye and show as red dots or a red ring in the cut stem. This is the standard experiment for showing the path of water.3. Consider the following statements.(i) Photosynthesis releases oxygen and uses carbon dioxide.(ii) Plants respire only at night.(iii) Transpiration helps to pull water up the stem.Which of the statements is/are correct?
- A(i) and (ii) only
- B(ii) and (iii) only
- C(i) and (iii) onlycorrect
- DAll three
Solution: Statement (i) is true. Statement (ii) is false — plants respire day and night; it only seems otherwise because during the day photosynthesis releases far more oxygen than respiration uses. Statement (iii) is true; the loss of vapour at the top creates a pull that draws water up. Hence (i) and (iii).
