What this worksheet covers
This is an eighteen-question practice worksheet on force, work and energy for Class 5, written to the pattern of the SOF National Science Olympiad (NSO). It carries 24 marks and is designed to be attempted in 40 minutes, split across three sections β Forces and Machines, Apply and Reason and Achievers Section. Every question is multiple choice with exactly one correct option, and every one comes with a fully worked solution rather than just an answer key β so a child who gets one wrong can see where the reasoning went astray instead of only learning that it did.
Skills your child practises
- Applied problem-solving on force, work and energy at Class 5 level
- Working accurately against a time limit, as the real paper demands
- Forces and Machines questions in the olympiad format
- Apply and Reason questions in the olympiad format
- Achievers Section questions in the olympiad format
- Reading worked solutions to find the step that went wrong
How to use it
- 1There are 18 questions in this worksheet. All questions are compulsory.
- 2Each question has four options (A), (B), (C) and (D). Exactly one option is correct.
- 3Questions 1β15 carry 1 mark each. Questions 16β18 (Achievers Section) carry 3 marks each.
- 4There is no negative marking. Do not use a calculator.
- 5Study every diagram and table carefully before answering.

1. A push or a pull acting on an object is called a _______.
- AWeight
- BMachine
- CSpeed
- DForcecorrect
Solution: A force is any push or pull. It can make a body at rest move, make a moving body stop or go faster, change its direction, or change its shape.2. Assertion (A): A ball rolled across a carpet stops sooner than one rolled across a smooth marble floor.Reason (R): The rough surface of the carpet produces more friction.Choose the correct option.
- ABoth A and R are true, and R explains Acorrect
- BBoth A and R are true, but R does not explain A
- CA is true but R is false
- DA is false but R is true
Solution: Both statements are true. Friction is greater between rough surfaces, so the carpet takes away the ball's kinetic energy faster and it stops in a shorter distance. The greater friction is exactly the reason for the earlier stop.3. Consider the following statements.(i) Friction is always harmful and should be removed completely.(ii) A stretched rubber band possesses potential energy.(iii) Energy can be created out of nothing when needed.Which of the statements is/are correct?
- A(ii) onlycorrect
- B(i) and (ii) only
- C(ii) and (iii) only
- DAll three
Solution: Statement (i) is false β friction wastes energy, but without it we could not walk, write or apply brakes, so it is useful as well as harmful. Statement (ii) is true; stretching stores energy in the rubber, which is released when it is let go. Statement (iii) is false; energy can only be changed from one form into another, never created or destroyed. So only (ii) is correct.
