What this worksheet covers
This is a fifteen-question practice worksheet on plants — parts and uses for Class 3, written to the pattern of the SOF National Science Olympiad (NSO). It carries 21 marks and is designed to be attempted in 40 minutes, split across three sections — Mathematical and Scientific Reasoning, Applying What You Know and Achievers Section. Every question is multiple choice with exactly one correct option, and every one comes with a fully worked solution rather than just an answer key — so a child who gets one wrong can see where the reasoning went astray instead of only learning that it did.
Skills your child practises
- Applied problem-solving on plants — parts and uses at Class 3 level
- Working accurately against a time limit, as the real paper demands
- Mathematical and Scientific Reasoning questions in the olympiad format
- Applying What You Know questions in the olympiad format
- Achievers Section questions in the olympiad format
- Reading worked solutions to find the step that went wrong
How to use it
- 1There are 15 questions in this worksheet. All questions are compulsory.
- 2Each question has four options (A), (B), (C) and (D). Exactly one option is correct.
- 3Questions 1–12 carry 1 mark each. Questions 13–15 (Achievers Section) carry 3 marks each.

1. The process by which green plants make their own food is called _______.
- ADigestion
- BPhotosynthesiscorrect
- CRespiration
- DGermination
Solution: Photosynthesis is the process in which leaves use sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to make food. It happens only in the green parts of a plant.2. Which of these seeds is most likely to be carried away by water?
- AXanthium (burr)
- BDandelion
- CCoconutcorrect
- DMaple
Solution: A coconut has a thick, light, air-filled husk, so it floats and can drift for long distances across the sea. Dandelion and maple seeds are carried by wind, and burrs stick to animal fur.3. Consider the following statements.(i) Plants take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen during photosynthesis.(ii) A seed needs sunlight in order to germinate.(iii) All roots grow downwards into the soil.Which of the statements is/are correct?
- A(i) onlycorrect
- B(i) and (ii) only
- C(ii) and (iii) only
- DAll three
Solution: Statement (i) is true. Statement (ii) is false — a seed germinates using the food already stored inside it, which is why seeds sprout perfectly well buried in dark soil. Statement (iii) is false; the prop roots of a banyan tree grow downwards from the branches, and some orchids have roots hanging in the air. Hence (i) only.
