What this worksheet covers
This is an eighteen-question practice worksheet on plants — parts, food making and reproduction for Class 5, written to the pattern of the SOF National Science Olympiad (NSO). It carries 24 marks and is designed to be attempted in 40 minutes, split across three sections — Parts of a Plant, Apply and Reason and Achievers Section. Every question is multiple choice with exactly one correct option, and every one comes with a fully worked solution rather than just an answer key — so a child who gets one wrong can see where the reasoning went astray instead of only learning that it did.
Skills your child practises
- Applied problem-solving on plants — parts, food making and reproduction at Class 5 level
- Working accurately against a time limit, as the real paper demands
- Parts of a Plant questions in the olympiad format
- Apply and Reason questions in the olympiad format
- Achievers Section questions in the olympiad format
- Reading worked solutions to find the step that went wrong
How to use it
- 1There are 18 questions in this worksheet. All questions are compulsory.
- 2Each question has four options (A), (B), (C) and (D). Exactly one option is correct.
- 3Questions 1–15 carry 1 mark each. Questions 16–18 (Achievers Section) carry 3 marks each.
- 4There is no negative marking. Do not use a calculator.
- 5Study every diagram and table carefully before answering.
Sample questions from this worksheet

1. Which part of a plant absorbs water and minerals from the soil?
- ALeaf
- BStem
- CRootcorrect
- DFlower
Solution: Roots grow downward into the soil and their fine root hairs absorb water and dissolved minerals. Roots also anchor the plant firmly in the ground.2. During photosynthesis, a green leaf takes in a gas from the air and gives out another gas. The gas taken in and the gas given out are, respectively:
- AOxygen and carbon dioxide
- BNitrogen and oxygen
- CCarbon dioxide and nitrogen
- DCarbon dioxide and oxygencorrect
Solution: Photosynthesis can be written as: carbon dioxide + water → (in sunlight, using chlorophyll) → food + oxygen. So the leaf takes in carbon dioxide through its stomata and releases oxygen. This is the reverse of what happens during breathing.3. Consider the following statements.(i) Photosynthesis takes place both during the day and at night.(ii) Tiny pores called stomata on a leaf allow gases to move in and out.(iii) A plant grown in the dark for many days turns pale and yellow.Which of the statements is/are correct?
- A(i) and (ii) only
- B(ii) and (iii) onlycorrect
- C(i) and (iii) only
- DAll three
Solution: Statement (i) is false — photosynthesis needs sunlight, so it stops at night (though respiration continues day and night). Statement (ii) is true; stomata are the tiny pores on the underside of a leaf through which carbon dioxide enters and oxygen and water vapour leave. Statement (iii) is true; without light the plant cannot make fresh chlorophyll, so it loses its green colour. Hence (ii) and (iii).
