What this worksheet covers
This is an eighteen-question practice worksheet on matter and materials for Class 5, written to the pattern of the SOF National Science Olympiad (NSO). It carries 24 marks and is designed to be attempted in 40 minutes, split across three sections — States and Properties of Matter, Apply and Reason and Achievers Section. Every question is multiple choice with exactly one correct option, and every one comes with a fully worked solution rather than just an answer key — so a child who gets one wrong can see where the reasoning went astray instead of only learning that it did.
Skills your child practises
- Applied problem-solving on matter and materials at Class 5 level
- Working accurately against a time limit, as the real paper demands
- States and Properties of Matter questions in the olympiad format
- Apply and Reason questions in the olympiad format
- Achievers Section questions in the olympiad format
- Reading worked solutions to find the step that went wrong
How to use it
- 1There are 18 questions in this worksheet. All questions are compulsory.
- 2Each question has four options (A), (B), (C) and (D). Exactly one option is correct.
- 3Questions 1–15 carry 1 mark each. Questions 16–18 (Achievers Section) carry 3 marks each.
- 4There is no negative marking. Do not use a calculator.
- 5Study every diagram and table carefully before answering.
Sample questions from this worksheet
A preview of what's inside Matter and Materials (Class 5) — the PDF has the full set, and every question comes with a worked solution like these.
1. Which state of matter has both a definite shape and a definite volume?
- ASolidcorrect
- BLiquid
- CGas
- DNone of these
Solution: In a solid the particles are packed tightly in fixed positions, so a solid keeps its own shape and volume. A liquid has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container, and a gas has neither.2. On a hot day, tiny drops of water appear on the outside of a glass of cold lemonade. These drops are formed because _______.
- AWater leaks out through the glass
- BThe lemonade evaporates through the glass
- CThe glass melts slightly
- DWater vapour in the air condenses on the cold surfacecorrect
Solution: The air always contains invisible water vapour. When this vapour touches the cold outer surface of the glass it cools down, loses energy and turns back into tiny liquid drops. This change from gas to liquid is condensation — the same process that forms dew and clouds.3. Consider the following statements.(i) When water freezes into ice, its mass increases.(ii) Evaporation takes place at every temperature, not only at the boiling point.(iii) Melting and freezing are opposite changes.Which of the statements is/are correct?
- A(i) and (ii) only
- B(ii) and (iii) onlycorrect
- C(i) and (iii) only
- DAll three
Solution: Statement (i) is false — freezing changes the volume of water (it expands), but the mass stays exactly the same, since no matter is added or removed. Statement (ii) is true; a wet floor dries at room temperature, showing that evaporation happens well below the boiling point. Statement (iii) is true; melting is solid → liquid and freezing is liquid → solid. Hence (ii) and (iii).
