What this worksheet covers
This is a fifteen-question practice worksheet on living and non-living things for Class 1, written to the pattern of the SOF National Science Olympiad (NSO). It carries 18 marks and is designed to be attempted in 30 minutes, split across three sections — Living or Non-living?, Thinking About Living Things and Achievers Section. Every question is multiple choice with exactly one correct option, and every one comes with a fully worked solution rather than just an answer key — so a child who gets one wrong can see where the reasoning went astray instead of only learning that it did.

1. Which of these is a living thing?
- AA dogcorrect
- BA chair
- CA stone
- DA book
Solution: A dog eats, breathes, grows and moves on its own, so it is a living thing. Chairs, stones and books do none of these.2. A car moves fast on the road, but it is a non-living thing. Why?
- ABecause it does not eat, grow or breathecorrect
- BBecause it is made of metal
- CBecause it is big
- DBecause it has wheels
Solution: Moving is not enough to be living. A car does not eat, grow or breathe, and it only moves when a driver makes it move.3. Which of these is not true about living things?
- AThey need food
- BThey stay exactly the same size for evercorrect
- CThey grow
- DThey need air
Solution: Living things do need food and air and they do grow. It is not true that they stay the same size for ever — growing is one of the main signs of life.
