What this worksheet covers

This is an eighteen-question practice worksheet on food, nutrition and health for Class 5, written to the pattern of the SOF National Science Olympiad (NSO). It carries 24 marks and is designed to be attempted in 40 minutes, split across three sections — Nutrients and Their Work, Apply and Reason and Achievers Section. Every question is multiple choice with exactly one correct option, and every one comes with a fully worked solution rather than just an answer key — so a child who gets one wrong can see where the reasoning went astray instead of only learning that it did.

Skills your child practises

  • Applied problem-solving on food, nutrition and health at Class 5 level
  • Working accurately against a time limit, as the real paper demands
  • Nutrients and Their Work questions in the olympiad format
  • Apply and Reason questions in the olympiad format
  • Achievers Section questions in the olympiad format
  • Reading worked solutions to find the step that went wrong

Sample questions from this worksheet

A preview of what's inside Food and Nutrition (Class 5) — the PDF has the full set, and every question comes with a worked solution like these.

  1. 1. Which nutrient is the body's main source of energy?

    • ACarbohydratescorrect
    • BProteins
    • CVitamins
    • DMinerals
Solution: Carbohydrates such as rice, wheat, potato and sugar are broken down quickly to release energy, so they form the largest part of a normal diet. Fats also give energy, but they are used mainly as a store.
  2. 2. Assertion (A): Fruits and vegetables should be washed thoroughly before they are eaten.Reason (R): Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals.Choose the correct option.

    • ABoth A and R are true, and R explains A
    • BBoth A and R are true, but R does not explain Acorrect
    • CA is true but R is false
    • DA is false but R is true
Solution: Both statements are true, but they are not connected. The real reason for washing is to remove dust, germs and traces of pesticide from the surface, which could otherwise cause stomach infections such as diarrhoea. Being rich in vitamins and minerals is a true fact about fruits and vegetables, but it is not the reason they must be washed.
  3. 3. Consider the following statements.(i) A balanced diet is the same for every person, whatever their age or work.(ii) Vitamins and minerals are needed in small quantities but are essential for good health.(iii) Overcooking vegetables destroys some of the vitamins in them.Which of the statements is/are correct?

    • A(i) and (ii) only
    • B(ii) and (iii) onlycorrect
    • C(i) and (iii) only
    • DAll three
Solution: Statement (i) is false — a growing child, a labourer and an elderly person all need different amounts of food, so a balanced diet differs from person to person. Statement (ii) is true; vitamins and minerals are called protective foods because tiny amounts keep the body working properly. Statement (iii) is true; vitamin C in particular is destroyed by prolonged heating, which is why vegetables should be lightly cooked. Hence (ii) and (iii).
