About our Alphabet & Phonics worksheets

The fastest route into reading is not the alphabet song. Teaching letters in A-to-Z order means a child's first five sounds build almost no real words, while a different opening set — s, a, t, p, i, n — lets them read “sat”, “pin”, “tap” and a dozen more within the first week. Reading a real word changes how a child sees the whole exercise. The worksheets here are organised by sound rather than alphabetically for that reason. They cover letter recognition, beginning and ending sounds, matching uppercase to lowercase, and blending short words, with the commonly confused pairs — b and d, p and q — kept well apart. Two things make phonics practice work better than anything else you can add to it: say each sound cleanly, without the trailing "uh" that turns “m-a-t” into "muhatuh", and read real words on the same day a sound is introduced. Our guide to what order to teach phonics in covers the full sequence and the tricky words that have to be learnt by sight instead.
