What this worksheet covers
This is an eighteen-question practice worksheet on fractions and decimals for Class 5, written to the pattern of the SOF International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). It carries 24 marks and is designed to be attempted in 45 minutes, split across three sections — Mathematical Reasoning, Everyday Mathematics and Reasoning and Achievers Section. Every question is multiple choice with exactly one correct option, and every one comes with a fully worked solution rather than just an answer key — so a child who gets one wrong can see where the reasoning went astray instead of only learning that it did.
Skills your child practises
- Applied problem-solving on fractions and decimals at Class 5 level
- Working accurately against a time limit, as the real paper demands
- Mathematical Reasoning questions in the olympiad format
- Everyday Mathematics and Reasoning questions in the olympiad format
- Achievers Section questions in the olympiad format
- Reading worked solutions to find the step that went wrong
How to use it
- 1There are 18 questions in this worksheet. All questions are compulsory.
- 2Each question has four options (A), (B), (C) and (D). Exactly one option is correct.
- 3Questions 1–15 carry 1 mark each. Questions 16–18 (Achievers Section) carry 3 marks each.
- 4There is no negative marking. Use of a calculator is not allowed.
- 5Rough work may be done in the space at the side of each page.

1. {3/4} + {5/6} = _______
- A{19/12}correct
- B{8/10}
- C{15/24}
- D{8/12}
Solution: The LCM of 4 and 6 is 12.
{3/4} = {9/12} and {5/6} = {10/12}.
Sum = {9/12} + {10/12} = {19/12}, which is 1{7/12}.2. Which shape has exactly {5/8} of it shaded?
- AP
- BQcorrect
- CR
- DS
Solution: Count the parts. Q is divided into 8 equal parts with 5 shaded, which is {5/8}. P shows {3/8}, R shows {2/8} and S shows {3/4}.3. Consider the following statements.(i) Between any two fractions there are infinitely many fractions.(ii) Multiplying a whole number by a proper fraction always gives a smaller number.(iii) 0.5 is greater than 0.45.Which of the statements is/are correct?
- A(i) and (ii) only
- B(ii) and (iii) only
- C(i) and (iii) only
- DAll threecorrect
Solution: Statement (i) is true — the mid-point of any two fractions lies between them, and the trick can be repeated endlessly. Statement (ii) is true; a proper fraction is less than 1, so multiplying by it shrinks the number (for example 8 × {3/4} = 6). Statement (iii) is true; comparing tenths, 5 is more than 4. Hence all three.
